The Seed are a Portsmouth-based originals band whose sound is as powerful as it is personal. Fronted by songwriter Clair Wheeler, whose influences span from Hazel O’Connor and Siouxsie Sioux to Sinéad O’Connor, the band create music that blends raw emotion with driving, drum-led rhythms and an Amazonian edge.
Formed in spring 2024, the band made their live debut as SEED at The Wedgewood Rooms, supporting local favourites Tornadoes. Following a line-up change later that year, they re-emerged as The Seed, with standout performances at venues including The Atrium, Southsea Spirit, and Casemates.
Their first three singles - Papa’s Shell, She, and Love Is a Bitch - are available now on Spotify, each carrying its own story and message. Lyrically, The Seed explore themes of resilience, transformation, and empowerment, often with mythical undertones.
Upcoming festival appearances include Victorious Festival (Twisted Tearooms stage, 22 August 2025) and Gosport Sunset Festival (29 August 2025).




Long Bio


The Seed are a Portsmouth-based originals band bringing an unapologetically powerful sound to the south coast music scene. Their music is rooted in personal storytelling, layered with driving rhythms, bold melodies, and an Amazonian energy that’s both empowering and evocative.
The project began in March 2024, when frontwoman and songwriter Clair Wheeler - who had been writing music since the age of 16 - was introduced to bassist Matt Knight (Fleetingwood Mac) through his sister Vicki. With a back catalogue of original songs and a shared vision, the band quickly took shape, debuting as a six-piece under the name SEED at The Wedgewood Rooms in July 2024, supporting local favourites Tornadoes. The set drew press attention from the Portsmouth News.
Influenced by strong female artists from the late ’70s to today, including Hazel O’Connor, Siouxsie Sioux, and Sinéad O’Connor, Wheeler writes songs with deep personal meaning, each carrying a story or life lesson. The band’s sound often centres around the drums, lending tracks a primal, almost ritualistic pulse, with moments that nod to mythical figures like Medusa or warrior queens like Boudica.
After a line-up change in October 2024, the group rebranded as The Seed and began performing as a tighter, more focused unit. Gigs at Atrium, Southsea Spirit, and Casemates solidified their reputation for commanding live performances that blend rock energy with lyrical depth.
The Seed released their first three singles - Papa’s Shell, She, and Love Is a Bitch - on Spotify in early 2025. Each track delivers its own salutary (and sometimes subliminal) message, with themes of empowerment, resilience, and transformation woven through the lyrics.
Looking ahead, The Seed will bring their distinctive sound to major local festivals, including Victorious Festival (Twisted Tearooms stage, 22 August 2025) and Gosport Sunset Festival (29 August 2025). With more music in the works, The Seed are ready to grow their presence on and off stage, delivering performances that stay with audiences long after the last chord fades.
